To Crate or not to Crate...that is the question of the day. We just got a puppy 2 weeks ago and he is now 12 weeks old. Obviously he wasn't housebroken yet. So we cordoned off our kitchen area with a baby gate and the two pocket doors. Every morning we got up and cleaned up a couple of piles and some puddles but had relatively close to 8 hours sleep. Yesterday we took the puppy (named Bandit) to the vet and once again I got the "you must crate your dog to potty train him" spiel. I finally convinced my husband to try it using two baby gates in the small front hallway. I came home around 9:30 and the doggy was very happily asleep in a corner of the family room. Not only did I wake him up but I made him go outside. To which he responded by playing not pooping. So I carried his spoiled self back into the house because I needed a pit stop and wanted to get to sleep. I put him in between the gates. He began to whine. He was a quiet dog, never barked never whimpered. I listened to him for an hour and then noticed the tone changed. It was like someone crying for help. I came out of the bedroom and found him stuck under one of the gates trying to slide his way out. I watched as he managed to do it. I left him loose in the kitchen and figured I would convey this in some manner to my husband when he came home. Ten minutes after I fell asleep, he woke me up to ask me about the dog. I told him he got stuck and to leave him. Apparently he didn't, he cleaned up a big mess and put the dog back between the gates (lowering the escaped one). I've spent the entire night semi-awake listening to the poor puppy whining and whimpering. We woke up (or got up) at 6 to discover not only did he poop in his confined space, but he threw up as well. So I started scrubbing and the hubbyand took the little guy out. He really needs a bath now and I have to go to work. Of course he's sound asleep, on his towel, right where he's slept peacefully for the last two weeks. I so wish I could join him.
Babies are babies, doesn't matter if they are human or not. Hope you get some sleep tonight.
